Dr. Victor Vogel, Scientific Advisory Board Member
Victor G. Vogel, MD, MHS; is Director of the Geisinger Cancer Institute in Danville, Pennsylvania. His prior experience includes American Cancer Society’s National Vice President for Research and Co-Director of the Magee-Women’s Hospital/University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Biochemoprevention Program and Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Vogel completed his undergraduate training at The Johns Hopkins University and graduated from Temple University Medical School. He was a resident in internal medicine at Baltimore City Hospitals and a Fellow in Medical Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center.
While an Oncology Fellow, he was an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Clinical Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, earning a master’s degree in epidemiology in 1986. From 1986 to 1995, he was on the faculty of the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and served as Deputy Chairman of the Department of Clinical Cancer Prevention.
Dr. Vogel is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Medicine and Preventive Medicine, and he is board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and general preventive medicine/public health. He is a recipient of numerous honors and awards including a Career Development Award from the American Cancer Society, a research fellowship from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Achievement Medal from the US Public Health Service.
Dr. Vogel is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and The Best Doctors in America. He is a member of numerous boards and committees including the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (emeritus) for the Women’s Health Initiative of the National Institutes of Health. He also served as the national protocol chairman of the National Cancer Institute’s STAR Trial (Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene).
Dr. Vogel is the author of more than 250 articles, book chapters and abstracts. He edited the books “Management of Patients at High Risk for Breast Cancer” (Blackwell Science 2001) and “Handbook of Breast Cancer Risk Assessment: Evidence-based Guidelines for Evaluation, Prevention, Counseling, and Management” (Jones and Bartlett Publishers, Boston, 2003.
Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, MD, Scientific Advisory Board Member
Daniel D. Von Hoff, MD, is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona. He is Senior Investigator and Director of Translational Drug Development (TD2) for Phoenix-based Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and head of its Pancreatic Cancer Research Program. He is also Chief Scientific Officer for US Oncology.
Dr. Von Hoff’s major interest is in the development of new anticancer agents, both in the clinic and in the laboratory. He and his colleagues were involved in the development of many agents we now routinely use, including: mitoxantrone, fludarabine, paclitaxel, docetaxel, gemcitabine, CPT-11, and others. At present, he and his colleagues are concentrating on the development of molecularly targeted therapies.
Dr. Von Hoff’s laboratory interests and contributions have been in the area of in vitro drug sensitivity testing to individualize treatment for the patient. He and his laboratory are now concentrating on discovery of new targets in pancreatic cancer. Dr. Von Hoff has published more than 515 papers, 129 book chapters, and more than 861 abstracts.
Dr. Von Hoff was appointed to President Bush’s National Cancer Advisory Board in June 2004 to serve through March 2010. Dr. Von Hoff is the past President of the American Association for Cancer Research, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member and past board member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is a founder of ILEX Oncology, Inc., acquired by Genzyme. He is founder and Editor Emeritus of Investigational New Drugs; The Journal of New Anticancer Agents; and, Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. He is also proud to have been a mentor and teacher for multiple medical students, medical oncology fellows, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows.
